Equipment of the 2nd Connecticut  

Welcome to the 2nd Connecticut,

This is a brief listing of the equipment that the soldier of the 2nd Connecticut Regiment of Militia should have.Knapsacks and Haversacks Each soldier must have at least one of the following:
  • Knapsack- Canvas should be painted brick red.
(The Warner Knapsack pattern is recommended, and at this time is the only documentable knapsack pattern for our region and period)
  • Market wallet
  • Haversack

All items carried within must be packed in period correct containers.

Each soldier should provide himself with the following:

  • One good woolen Blanket, solid, checked, plaid, or stripe of
    authentic design.
Cartridge box Each Firearm should be accompanied by:
  • Cartridge box with cartridges, 15 rounds at least, or Bullet Pouch
    and horn.
  • 40 lead balls, fitted to his gun

Shooting/Hunting pouch If desired, a Connecticut militiaman may carry a shooting or hunting pouch suitable for his needs, however it must be of a documentable pattern typical of the New England region for the period depicted. Powder Horn In addition to the above, items, a Connecticut militiaman may carry extra powder in an appropriate powder horn. The horn must have an attached functioning stopper.  Bayonet carriage Each Connecticut Militiaman is encouraged to posses a bayonet fitted to his gun. Bayonets must be carried on a sheath on a shoulder strap, or attached to a belt. Tomahawk / Ax / Knife To be supplied by the company soldier from personal stores.

  • Sword, Hatchet, or Tomahawk
  • Clasp or Jack Knife, or Belt knife
Canteen and Personal Accoutrements Each man is required to be able to eat and drink while in the field. This requires the usage of some sort of canteen and eating tools, along with any desired spices.
Each soldier shall provide himself with at least 1 canteen or water bottle. It must hold at least 1 quart. The following are acceptable.
  • Wooden
  • Tin
  • Leather
  • Covered glass

 

The following items are acceptable, so long as they are of period correct appearance:

  • Wooden bowls
  • Pewter plates
  • Pewter or silver spoons and forks
  • Pewter cups
  • Tin plates
  • Tin cups
  • Wire forks
  • Ceramic containers
 

 

Each soldier shall have a good firearm. If a person already possesses a serviceable rifle of the period, he will be allowed to join, but will be encouraged to obtain one of the listed preferred firelock types as listed below.
One of the following in serviceable condition and well maintained.

  • French Musket w/ bayonet
  • Brown Bess British Musket of 1st or 2nd pattern w/bayonet
  • Committee Of Safety Musket w/ bayonet
  • Fowling Piece or Smoothbore gun

Each person must be able to maintain his firelock in the field. Recommended tools are a turn-screw, oil, extra flints, vent pick, and pan bush. Occasionally, one may find that he wants an additional weapon. All additional weapons must conform to patterns and types available to a Connecticut militiaman during the war for independence. Be prepared to show documentation to support the pattern and type of weapon, and evidence to support its use by your persona.
